The Marine Mammal Observer Association (MMOA) is a membership based association with the aim of bringing together and representing individuals who work commercially and professionally as marine fauna mitigation professionals who implement mitigation measures to protect marine life during industry operations.

MMOA aims to works with professional, experienced and newly qualified MMOs, PSOs and PAM operators, industry, government agencies, non-government organisations (NGOs) and academics to improve the profession's effectiveness by:

  • Developing professional competency.

  • Improving collection and use of data.

  • Assimilating field experience and knowledge of marine fauna mitigation professionals.

  • Providing a collective voice for offshore professionals.

  • Promoting the marine fauna mitigation profession in the offshore industry.

  • Improving protection for marine mammals.

MMOA seek to achieve this through:

  • Attendance at relevant conferences and meetings by MMOA spokespersons to represent marine fauna mitigation interests.

  • Recognising the skills of professional MMOs, PSOs, PAM Operators, MMO managers and associated consultants and providing marine fauna mitigation professionals with career development opportunities and advice.

  • Encouraging feedback from professional and experienced marine fauna mitigation professionals through an online forum.

  • Providing a point of contact for advice and consultation on marine mammal mitigation issues, feedback on improving/reviewing guidelines and marine fauna mitigation data collection.

  • Improving knowledge of members through an Information Directory

  • Working to encourage and promote the systematic collection, collation and analysis of marine fauna data worldwide.

The European Association for Aquatic Mammals abbreviated as “EAAM.” was formed as an interest group in 1972 at a meeting in the Netherlands. In August 2012 a non-profit Association, with same name was established, with its head office located in Brussels, Belgium. The EAAM’s membership includes veterinarians, biologists, zoo and marine park directors and managers, trainers and caretakers, researchers, students and other persons who devote a significant amount of time to the in situ and ex situ welfare and conservation of marine mammals through research, medical care, training, education, conservation, management and related activities.
